0

Title: BREAKSHIELD
Author: J.B. Rockwell
Release Date: March 27, 2014

Found at the intersection of life and the afterlife, the Between is a place where science and reason are replaced by magic and violence. It is a place where Typhon and his Hunstman of the Dark Waste spread like a plague and where Talents go to die.

The only thing standing in Typhon’s way is Morgan Quendalen and the people of the Shining Lands. They are sworn to protect the last remaining Talents, a precious few who teeter at the edge of extinction. Morgan valiantly fights, protecting these last remnants of magic in a war he's not sure he can actually win.

When Jamie Aster, a mortal Talent with undiscovered powers, is put under his charge, Morgan weighs his oath against a desire to save the Shining Lands. Could he kill a Talent if it meant saving his people?

J.B. Rockwell grew up reading fairy tales, folklore and mythology, as well as anything everything about ancient cultures and their history, and never lost her taste for any of it. Unsurprisingly, her college studies focused on anthropology with an emphasis on investigating mythical events and trying to tie them back to historical fact. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of jobs (much less money) in anthropology so after several years of low-paying, unsatisfying jobs, she went back to school and earned a very practical (and very boring MBA). Somehow that MBA landed her a job in IT and for the past twelve years she has been managing software systems and information technology development projects for the US Coast Guard, a job which is neither boring nor unrewarding. She continues to write in her spare time and has several short stories that have been picked up for publication. Born and raised in Connecticut, J.B. Rockwell currently lives in West Virginia with her husband and two cats, all of whom provide inspiration for her stories, whether they know it or not.

Feature and Follow Friday #3

2

The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee's View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it'll allow us to show off more new blogs!

How does this work? First you leave your name here on this post, (using the linky tools -- keep scrolling!) then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code under the #FF picture and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them "hi" in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!

This Week's Question:
Find a “new to you blogger” and feature their button on your post this week (or just a link if they have no button). Tell us why this blogger stands out to you.

Although she isn't a new blogger, I came across her blog a few weeks back when I was looking through the profiles of YA Bound Blogspot.  She has a mixed reviews of both YA and NA (although mostly YA) plus we almost have the same taste in books.

Review of The Dividing Line (Space #2) by Victoria H. Smith

0

A new love and a new life.

Drake left Chicago with little more than the clothes on his back to be with his girlfriend Lacey. Though he has no regrets, he sometimes wonders if his time spent in Paris has put his life on hold. He’s overworked and underpaid at his dead-end job, and his employer sees him as expendable. His bright light at the end of the day is Lacey, but he finds himself slowly falling into the shadow of her newly-acquired fame. The city of love has found their new starlet in Lacey, but Drake is simply the man by her side.

With all good things there comes a price.

Lacey has been living the dream. She arrived in Paris with nothing but heartache and loss. Now, she’s the rising star of the city’s newest opera and dating the man of her dreams. When her performance contract is extended, she must decide if her new life of glitz and glam is what’s best for a future with the man she loves—or if it’s just what’s best for her.

Paris brought Drake and Lacey together. But when their hopes for the future begin taking them in different directions, they must find a common ground or risk a line dividing them that may prove to be insurmountable.

The Dividing Line is the sequel to the new adult multicultural romance The Space Between.

My Review
 5 Stars

This story continues of Lacey being a successful opera singer while Drake although is supportive of her wasn't experiencing the same success and decided to go back which starts to cause the rift between their relationship. I was getting frustrated when there were other characters that made them jealous and when there were miscommunications between them. Although I wouldn't change anything because in the end they overcome those problems and they became stronger.

I agree that this was so much better than the first book and I understood the Lacey and Drake more. Not only that but their character development improved more plus the flow of their relationship. I really like the message pf this story about two different cultures being together and how they would over come the obstacles to come that would be a trial in their relationship.

I really loved the ending of the book. They both have improved much both as an individual and as a couple.

*I received an arc in exchange for an honest review*

A one-night stand with a werewolf has unexpected consequences in Theresa Meyers's latest romance in the Sons of Midnight series.

After he is exiled from his pack, Tyee Grayson must learn to make it on his own. But one night with a beautiful stranger who has luminous blue eyes changes everything…. Especially when his instincts shout that she is the one.

All elementary school teacher Jessica Brierly wanted was a night on the wild side, but when she finds herself pregnant, all the rules change. Not only does her lover have more secrets than she ever imagined, but suddenly they're both fighting off vampires.

When vampires attack the town she dearly loves, Ty must work with his old pack to save them from a ruthless enemy who could kill not only his mate and his unborn child—but the entire human race.

Excerpt:

The air was clean and cold outside. Ty’s head cleared, his senses grew sharper. The cool evening breeze, heavy with the salty scent of nearby Puget Sound, ruffled Jess’s hair, sticking honey-colored wisps to her full, rosy lips.
“You okay?” he asked as he gently tucked the strands back behind her ear.
Jess blinked, and stared up at him, a mixture of curiosity and disbelief in her eyes. “What just happened in there?”
He tried to give her a lopsided grin, but it turned into a wince when he found his jaw was tender from the hits the vampire had landed. He rubbed the soreness. The night air chilled the dribble of blood from the cut on his cheek, making it wet and cold, but there was no scent of vampire. The third one must have been smart enough to ditch his buddies. His body ached from the fight, but it would heal fast enough. “A bar fight with strangers.”
“You didn’t know those guys?” she asked, looking around her nervously. “They seemed pretty intent on messing with you.” She grazed the corner of his mouth with her fingertips. “You’re hurt.”
The light touch was enough to send a powerful surge of awareness pounding through him that wiped away any of the ache that remained. Damn. There was no doubt in his mind there was a strong Mesmer forming with this woman.
He gently moved her fingers away from his mouth, keeping them folded in his. Her hands were fine boned and slender and feminine. “No big deal.”
Her full lips tipped up into a soft smile, making him crave to kiss her. “Tough guy, huh?” She pulled a car remote from her pocket and pushed it, making the lights flash on a silver pickup on the edge of the dirt-and-gravel parking area beside the bar.
“Sounds like you’ve been around a few.”
She opened the driver’s door to the pickup and turned, standing in the gap, staring at him, her head tilted. “A few. But they’re nothing like you.”
Ty closed the gap between them, putting one hand on the door frame, shielding her from view of the parking lot but maintaining space between them. He knew better than to get close enough to be swamped by temptation. The Mesmer might be working on him, but that didn’t mean she’d understand if he came on too strong. Especially not after the fight.
“If you want to head home, I understand. I’ll stay here awhile and make sure those guys don’t follow you home.”
She reached out and grabbed fistfuls of his T-shirt near his collarbones, pulling him close until he was chest to chest with her. The soft swells of her breasts pressed against him and the minty scent of her hair, and hint of lilac on her skin teased his sensitive sense of smell. Everything within him went silent and still, fixated on the lush curve of her mouth so damn close to his he could feel the warmth of her breath.
“What I want is for you to come home with me.” Jess stood on her tiptoes and looked up into his face, the dark fringe of lashes around her eyes making the blue luminous. Her rapid pulse beat against his chest, taking over the rhythm until his matched the pace she set. For a second the world tilted sideways.
Ty’s gaze dropped to the silky, damp edge of her lips and he was lost. He dipped down and kissed her. Her lips were soft and willing, tasting of peppermint. She tasted so damn sweet, hot and spicy all at once. A warm, viscous heat flowed through his veins, coating and drowning out every other sensation until he was hot and hard at the same time.
Ty gripped the edge of the truck’s door frame, nearly denting the sheet metal with his fingertips. But he was determined to keep his hands to himself, even though they itched to touch her. Heat seeped through his shirt, the temperature difference amplified by the chill in the air. The kiss turned deeper, slicker, the tip of her tongue brushing against his. The spicy fragrance of female that spiked the air left no doubt she was aroused. When they broke apart, both of them were breathing hard, their breath creating misty white clouds.
“You sure about this?” He could control his body, but not the rough edge of his voice as he struggled to maintain composure. “I could follow you.”
Jess looked up at him, her dark lashes dropping a fraction, giving her a sultry look. “Hop in.”
He was smart enough not to argue with her, but that didn’t mean that the little voice of human reason in the back of his head wasn’t screaming loudly that this was stupid and rash. He should take his own vehicle so he didn’t get stuck who knew where. He didn’t know a damn thing about her. Couldn’t read her mind and certainly hadn’t asked enough questions. But this was a Mesmer, the wild Were instinct side of him shouted back. No one, Were especially, could blame him for responding so quickly and profoundly to her. And hell, he could always follow his nose and walk back if he needed to.
“Anything you say,” he answered. He waited until she climbed up into the cab, admiring the way the dark denim jeans hugged the curve of her ass, then closed the truck door and walked around the back of the pickup. An uneasy sensation raised the hairs on his skin. He glanced over his shoulder one last time to make sure they weren’t being followed.

Cover Reveal + Giveaway: The Serpent's Fate by J.K. Hogan

1

The Serpent’s Fate
Vigilati Series
Book 3
J.K. Hogan

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Word Count: 100,000 words

Cover Artist: KHD Graphics

Book Description:

Can a traumatized veteran-turned-mercenary who is tormented by voices in his head be saved by the love of a wayward single mother with demons of her own? Afflicted by PTSD from serving in Afghanistan, and tormented by a childhood trauma, transient veteran Matthieu Rousseau struggles with the choices he's made in his life. Estranged from his family, Matthieu drifts from one mercenary job to the next, until one thing stops him. Fate.

In hiding from her abusive ex-husband, musician Fate Callahan lives in New Orleans with her seven-year-old daughter. She remains in constant fear of being found, and her worst nightmare comes alive when a dark, dangerous stranger tells her he’s been hired to locate and kill her—but wants to save her instead.

Fate and Matthieu find themselves on the run together, fleeing from the hitmen and an unseen evil worse than anything else they’ll face. While just trying to stay alive, they become entangled in the battle between the Vigilati and the Lochrim; an archaic sect of witches and the evil creatures they are bred to fight. Unbeknownst to Fate and Matthieu, they are more deeply connected to the Vigilati than either of them could ever imagine.

They must join family and allies of the Vigilati to help save the human world, possibly saving each other along the way. Matthieu teaches Fate how to trust in love again, while she gives him back the one thing he never thought he deserved—family.

Excerpt:

Fate shot upright in her bed, on instant alert as she looked around the dark room. Something had woken her, she was sure of it. But there was nothing there. Her room, seemingly the whole house, was dead silent, yet she knew she had to have heard something.
While her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she climbed out of bed and put on a thin robe over her tank top and shorts. She crept towards the door to her bedroom, treading lightly while still listening for anything out of the ordinary. Her hand froze on the doorknob as she remembered Matthieu’s whispered plea to keep the door locked.
She’d planned on obeying—but what if their pursuers had made their way into the house? What if they’d taken out Matthieu? Fate wasn’t about to wait in her bedroom for them to come and get her, the perfect gift-wrapped sitting duck.
She had to make a quick decision. Turning the lock, she stepped out into the hall and listened. Finally, she heard it…a pained moan coming from somewhere in the living room. It was barely audible, yet excruciating—as if someone were gasping out their last breath. Matthieu.
Fate hurried into the open living room which was washed in pale moonlight from the large picture windows. She didn’t see anything at first so she started to turn toward Matthieu’s bedroom, when she heard the sound again, much more faint.
It came from the couch. Panicked, she rounded the end of the overstuffed sofa and looked down; sure she was going to find Matthieu bleeding out on the supple leather. He was there, but with no physical injuries that she could see.
His body was completely tense, back bowed off the couch but arms and legs straight, as if they were bound. But his face...his face was screwed into a twisted mask of indescribable pain—jaws clenched, teeth bared, eyes squeezed tightly shut.
She watched as he seemed to struggle against the invisible bonds, and he let out another one of those death-moans. The sound tore at her and she was drawn to it, helpless to do anything but try and stop his pain. Yes, he’d made her promise never to wake him—but maybe she didn’t have to. Maybe she could soothe him, ease his pain, while he still slept. It was worth a shot.
Climbing onto the couch over him, she straddled his hips and stared down at his pain stricken face. “Here goes nothing,” she whispered, and grabbed his thick wrists, one in each of her hands.
She felt her body convulse as she was violently ripped from her own consciousness and thrown, head-first, into Matthieu’s.

I’m in the dream, Fate thought. She was in Matthieu’s nightmare and, more than that, she was Matthieu. For that moment in time, she had his thoughts, his memories. She was inside him.
She found herself strapped down by the arms and legs to a metal table, surrounded by men chattering in a language she’d never heard, but somehow understood—because Matthieu did. Looking down at her body—Matthieu’s body—she saw that it was covered in blood that oozed from dozens of open wounds. They were too shallow to be fatal, but enough to cause immeasurable pain. No wonder he’d cried out.
Finally, the men stopped yelling, and one who seemed to be the ringleader—Patang—approached her. He gestured to one of the other men, who opened the door of the dank, dungeon-esque room. A third man came through tugging a bound soldier, an American, and pushed him to stand in front of them.
Fate felt Matthieu’s stomach constrict and his heart begin to pound. A name flickered through her mind, just a whisper – Striker, one of Matthieu’s team members—a brother in arms. Striker’s captor kicked at the back of his knees, forcing him to kneel in front of the leader, before taking out a wicked looking knife.
“Last chance, Sergeant,” he said in that guttural language. “Who sent you? Who’s pulling your strings?”
Matthieu hesitated, and the man holding Striker pressed the knife closer to his jugular. Fate could hear Matthieu’s thoughts racing as he stared at his friend in what could possibly be his last moments alive. Striker knew that Matthieu wouldn’t give up his unit—in fact, as Matthieu’s eyes connected with the other man’s, Striker stared him down and gave him an almost imperceptible shake of his head.
You were trained for this, Rousseau, he told himself. They couldn’t sacrifice the entire unit, the entire mission, for two men, and they both knew it. Slowly, with his heart clenching in his chest, Matthieu turned his face to the leader and glared, then looked back at Striker.
The leader obviously took it as confirmation that neither soldier was talking. With a stiff nod to his subordinate, Patang stood there, detached, as the man pulled the sharp knife across Striker’s throat and let him drop.
Fate felt Matt’s pain, but also his conviction. He wouldn’t grieve much for Striker, knowing the man had died the way he lived, protecting his country. But he would grieve the rest of his life for Riksa.
She’d had enough. She wanted to be back to herself. I need to be me, she repeated, and concentrated on pulling her thoughts from Matthieu’s. Finally, she felt herself separate, but much to her disappointment, they were still in the dream.
The insurgents had gone and left them alone with Striker’s cooling body. Fate cringed and tried not to look. Instead, she concentrated on Matthieu. She could see him now as she stood beside the torture table. He was strapped down by his arms and legs, covered in blood from the agglomeration of wounds that marred his body.
His face was turned towards her, but his eyes were on Striker. She wasn’t sure if he’d be able to see her anyway—then again, she didn’t really know the rules of invading someone’s dream. It had never happened before.
Matthieu’s body was racked with violent tremors and tears were running down his face, mingling with the blood to create ghastly red streaks from the corners of his eyes. After a few moments of silence, he threw his head back and let out an anguished roar.
Fate had had enough. No one deserved to suffer this much. Heedless of the blood, she stroked his face with a gentle hand. “Matthieu, it’s time to wake up. Let it go, for now.” She was startled when he stopped screaming and grief-stricken eyes locked onto hers.

Fate was slammed back into her own body with the force of a freight train. But it didn’t dislodge her from her perch on Matthieu. Her hands remained wrapped around his wrists. Good thing, too, because he came up swinging.
Well, he would have, but Fate concentrated all of her energy on holding him down. His body raged and bucked beneath her as he tried to dislodge whatever was weighing him down. She just held on as tight as she could.
“Matthieu,” she said in a calm voice that belied her trepidation. She repeated his name over and over until his violent motions stilled and his eyes began to focus. A deep, dark chocolate, his eyes finally rested on her face and widened. While still cautious, Fate let go of his hands but kept her position on top of him.
Matthieu looked disoriented as his eyes bounced around the room, likely trying to get a handle on exactly where—and when—he was.
“Hey. It’s me. You had a bad dream, but you’re here in New Orleans. La Maison de Rousseau, remember?” she asked with a quirk of her lips.
Finally he nodded and threw a heavy arm over his face. She couldn’t see his eyes, but the tears that seeped down his cheeks were clear as a bell. His muscles took up that full body shudder he’d had in the dream, and his big chest began to convulse.
Swallowing down her fear, Fate lifted his arm away from his face and held his head still so that he was forced to meet her eyes. She stroked his scarred cheek—realizing that the injury had to have happened before the torture—and spoke softly to him.
“Matthieu, you have to let it go.”
“How can I?” he said. His voice cracked as his body was shaken with another brutal shudder.
“Tell me,” she answered. Without a thought, she ran her fingers through his hair and found it softer than she would have imagined. He tensed and she was sure he wouldn’t speak, but then he did.
The whole story poured out of him in stuttering gasps and sobs—he told her about the mission, the bomb, the civilians who’d been killed. So that was who Riksa was. He told her about his injuries, to his eyes, ears, and throat—and, yeah, that explained the voice.
He told her about getting captured, and being tortured by Patang and his crew. She was horrified by what they had done to him, but she forced herself to keep calm. Finally, he told her about Striker—SFC Vincent “Striker” Perelli—and how he’d essentially signed the man’s death warrant.
When it was all done, he looked so destroyed, so miserable, that her heart went out to him. She leaned forward and took his face in her hands. “You were doing a job and still, you did everything you could to try and save Riksa. And you did exactly what Striker had wanted—expected—you to do. You have to let this go, and forgive yourself.”
            “I don’t think I can.”
“Try,” she said, and leaned over to touch her lips to his.

3 FUN FACTS ABOUT VALENTINE'S DAY

1.    WHO WAS ST. VALENTINE?
At least two men named Valentinus were named St. Valentine but only one of them was ever given full sainthood in any venue. Both were supposedly imprisoned and later executed for marrying soldiers, who were forbidden to wed (go figure) and ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire.

Although both men were at one time designated saints, the Valentinus  who died on the 14th of February on the Via Flaminia close to the Milvian bridge in Rome still remains on am officially recognized list. Saint Valentine's Church in Rome, built in 1960 for the needs of the Olympic Village, continues as a modern, well-visited parish church.

What makes this St. Valentine rise above the other is that in addition to his ministry to soldiers and Christians, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius, from blindness. Sadly, he was stoned and beheaded anyway.  As legend has it, before his execution he wrote a letter to Asterius and signed it, 'Your Valentine.' (What? Is there more to this legend than just healing?)

2.    WHAT'S SO ROMANTIC ABOUT THAT?
We have to go back to the "Canterbury Tales for that answer." In the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages the tradition of romantic, courtly love flourished. By the seventeen hundreds it evolved into a major holiday. Lovers gave each other flowers and sweets and sent cards that soon became known as valentines. Remember grade school when we all brought cards to class and handed them out?  How we didn't want to give them to the 'icky' kids but our parents and teachers made us. The holiday was a big deal then and it seemed to me that the whole world exchanged cards and gifts. By then, other symbols had entered the game – the heart outline, doves, Cupid. Sweethearts, particularly those living in America, spend generously on this day.

3.    HOW MUCH DO WE SPEND?
In the battle for who spends the most, Valentine's Day overcomes Halloween. Americans are expected to spend $17.6 billion on candy, balloons, paper cards and other tokens of love. At Halloween, Americans spent $6.86 billion, according to the National Retail Federation. But those who celebrate Valentine's Day shell out over a hundred dollars per person. Halloween, by comparison, earns less than $75 per person. Money aside, Halloween remains the more popular holiday. Seventy percent of adults surveyed celebrate Halloween, compared to only sixty percent Valentine's Day.

What about you? Is Valentine's Day a big deal between you and your honey? Us it worth more than a hundred dollars? Or is Halloween more your style? Let me hear your thoughts. Leave a comment and you'll be entered in the raffle.

Feature and Follow Friday #2

8

The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee's View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it'll allow us to show off more new blogs!
I'm still tweaking my blog but it'll get better.
Please follow me via GFC and comment so I could follow you back.

Question of the Week: If you could read a book for the “first time” again, which book would it be? Why?

Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead - This was probably one of the first YA novel I've read that I could remember. I loved Rose's strong character despite her being too stubborn plus her relationship with Dimitri was one of the reasons that got me hooked to reading it. It was also the reason that led me to love reading books as well.

Malory - Anderson Family Series by Johanna Lindsey - It wasn't my first historical romance read but each of their own story and as an individual was really interesting. I also loved how they got together and when they do their celebrations as a family. They are a really close tight family even if they have a unique way of showing it. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series because I recently found out that there would be a next installment to the series.

Forever Ever More Series by Scarlett Dawn - Two words. Ezra. Zeller.
