[Blog Tour] Excerpt + Giveaway + Guest Post: Wildfire Creek (Redemption Mountain Historical Western Romance #2) by Shirleen Davies

1

Book Description

“A passionate story of rebuilding lives and working to
find a place in the wild frontier during the years following the American Civil
War. A rugged, heartwarming story of choices and love in the continuing saga of
Redemption Mountain.”

Luke Pelletier is
settling into his new life as a rancher and occasional Pinkerton Agent, leaving
his past as an ex-Confederate major and Texas Ranger far behind. He wants
nothing more than to work the ranch, charm the ladies, and live a life of
carefree bachelorhood.

Ginny Sorensen
has accepted her responsibility as the sole provider for herself and her
younger sister. The desire to continue their journey to Oregon is crushed when
the need for food and shelter keeps them in the growing frontier town of
Splendor, Montana, forcing Ginny to accept work as a server in the local
saloon.
Luke has never met a woman as lovely and unspoiled as Ginny.
He longs to know her, yet fears his wild ways and unsettled nature aren’t what
she deserves. She’s a girl you marry, but that is nowhere in Luke’s plans.
Complicating
their tenuous friendship, a twist in circumstances forces Ginny
closer to the man she most wants to avoid—the
man who can destroy her dreams, and who’s captured her heart.

Believing his bachelor status firm, Luke moves from danger
to adventure, never dreaming each step he takes brings him closer to his true
destiny and a life much different from what he imagines.

“Hold it right there.”

Ginny froze, not recognizing the deep growl coming from behind
her.
“Put your hands up and turn around.”

She did as he asked, her heart pounding, wondering if someone had
slipped by Hank to come in the front door. Slowly she turned, raising her eyes
to meet those of the man holding a gun on her. Her breath caught at the sight
of Luke, his face hard, his mouth in a thin line. She could see the instant
recognition dawned. He lowered the gun in a quick motion and slammed it into
the holster.

“What the hell are you doing here? And why are you dressed like
that?”

She swallowed the hard lump in her throat and took in a shuttering
breath, anger replacing the fear she’d felt.

“You scared the daylights out of me,” she hissed and pulled the
hat off her head, exposing soft brown wisps of hair which had escaped the loose
bun.

He held his ground, taking in the sight of her in men’s trousers,
a too big shirt haphazardly tucked inside and held together by a wide leather
belt. The coat he’d given her covered the ridiculous outfit. He let his gaze
wander over her, his eyes softening at the same time his body tightened—a
reaction he was powerless to control.
“I asked what you’re doing here, sneaking around the house.
Stealing?”

“I am not stealing,” she
threw back at him. “I work here.”

“What?” His voice took on a hard edge as his eyes narrowed,
signaling his disbelief.

“Dax and Rachel hired me to take on Bernice’s job.”

He took a step forward, then thought better of it, crossing his
arms over his chest, planting his feet shoulder width apart. Frustration warred
with the desire he felt toward her. This was not what he’d expected to come
home to—Ginny living at the ranch. It slammed into him that he’d see her every
day, obliged to be around her, and forced to fight his constant attraction
toward her. His jaw hardened as he processed the implication of her new
position. He didn’t like it. Not one bit.

“We’ll see about that.” He turned and stormed from the room,
walking into the study, slamming the door behind him.

~ GUEST POST ~

Why I Write Western Romance
By Shirleen Davies

I was more or less fated to write about the American west long before I ever set out to write my first book—you could say it’s in my blood. I grew up in Southern California between the beach and the mountains, and most of my childhood was spent camping, hiking, and swimming at the beach. My extended family (on both sides) had farms and ranches, stocked with horses, cattle, sheep, and chickens. I’ve also lived in Oregon and Colorado and have never been far from places with major ties to ranching and farming. I hold these experiences close to my heart, and know they were a major part of making me who I am today.

In college, I originally majored in American History (I would eventually complete a degree in business), which fascinated me and provided the context and hard knowledge that forms the foundation of my writing work. Even after I switched majors, my curiosity was not quieted. Obviously, I never outgrew my fascination with the past, and with the American west in particular.

One of the things I have come to especially love about writing in that setting is the values and virtues of the people. What can be dismissed on one hand as  “old-fashioned” can be defended on the other as prioritizing honor, integrity, and discipline, all of which I would say are inarguably positive. Positive though they may be, I often look around and feel those values are tragically overlooked and undervalued in recent years. Writing about people who follow a basic code of honor and espouse a strong set of guiding principles is a way of getting a taste of “what once was,” and of sharing an intimate glimpse of it with others.

It’s close to my heart and deep in my brain, and in some ways, it’s an escape to a simpler, honorable time.

Summary
from Goodreads:
Allison
McKready is a succubus. So is her twin sister. But while Allison spends her
summer break hiding in the library behind her Goth makeup, Jade fools around as
often as she can. Allison can’t believe Jade would ignore their mother’s fatal
example so recklessly, but concealing a cursed bloodline and its dangerous
effects is far from Allison’s only problem. Mean girl Julie’s snob mob is
determined to ruin her summer, and Aunt Sarah’s Bible thumping is getting
louder. Only her new friend, Ren Fisher, offers safe haven from the chaos of
her life.

When one of Jade’s risky dates leads to humiliation and sudden tragedy, Allison
reels, and Ren catches her. But as her feelings for him grow, so does her fear
that she’ll hurt him—or worse—in an unguarded moment. The choice is coming—love
him or save him—but Allison might not live to make it. One way or another, the
curse will have its due.
About
the Author
Angela V. Cook lives a very unexciting, but never
boring, life with her husband and two children just outside of Detroit. Like most
writers, she’s been making up stories for as long as she can remember and can’t
imagine a life that doesn’t involve creating worlds.

Angela loves to write novels for teens because it’s the best outlet for her
sarcastic personality, immature sense of humor, and love of romantic firsts.
Her idea of the perfect day involves a quiet house, a good book, and a piece of
cheesecake. Or two.

Never agree to a road trip to New Orleans with your roommate. At least not when your roommate is dragging you along while she reconnects with an ex-boyfriend. Possible consequences of failing to take my advice:

1) Unknowingly going out with a vampire stripper
2) Getting kidnapped by said vampire's nest mates
3) Falling head over heels for your winged hero

Believe it or not number 3 is the worst one, especially when no one believes you that he exists.

~ EXCERPT ~

Someone’s hand was on my breast. Not just on my breast, but cupping it. My eyes flew open. Where was I? As I felt something hard poking my back I remembered. I screamed and jumped out of bed. “What the hell?”
“Hey, Daisy. Didn’t want to wait up for me?” Shaun’s voice was level like we were talking casually, but he’d said my name which meant he’d known it was me. That ruled out any possibility of him being drunk and forgetting who I was.
I stumbled around looking for the light. I didn’t bother with the lamp. Instead I went for the overhead light.
“Fuck.” Shaun cursed as the light blinded us both.
“What were you doing?”
“I was enjoying the beautiful girl in my bed, what did you think I was doing?”
“You told me I could sleep here.” I wrapped my arms around my chest. Even though my t-shirt provided good coverage, I wasn’t wearing a bra.
“Yes, I did.” He grinned.
“And that offer implied you weren’t sleeping here.”
“No, it didn’t. I’d never agree to sleep on that couch.” His face wrinkled up in disgust.
“I thought of that. I assumed you had somewhere else to sleep.”
“Somewhere else?” Understanding crossed his face. “Oh, no. I wasn’t planning on crashing anywhere else.”
“You somehow got the impression that I wanted to sleep in the same bed as you?”
“You want exactly what I do.” He arched an eyebrow.
“No, I don’t. That’s why I jumped out of bed.”
“You were surprised—that was the point. Now why don’t you come back to bed so we can get things started.” He pulled away the blanket and sheet revealing what I already knew. He was completely naked. And completely aroused.
“Oh god.” I grabbed my stuff as I headed for the door. My clothes from the day slipped off the top of the duffel, so I bent to pick them up where they landed right next to his bed. As I reached for my shirt I came face to face with a picture of a half-naked woman, and from the looks of the rolled-up posters beside it, there were more like it. Of course. This perv had planned this all along. What a creep. I stood up, and did one quick look around for the rest of my stuff. I wouldn’t be stepping foot into his room again. I’d rather sleep on the floor or outside.
I turned the doorknob, and it took an extra turn. “You locked the door?” I said mostly to myself as I opened the door.
“I figured you wouldn’t want anyone walking in on us.” Shaun’s voice came from right behind me.
I didn’t turn around. What if he was still naked? “I’m sleeping on the couch. Stay far away from me.”

“Well? Are you going to take me to her or not?” Cora asked, getting frustrated as she cocked her hip out in annoyance.
“What’s your plan if I say no?” Rogan looked at his watch casually, which only irritated Cora more.
“You wouldn’t dare.”
Rogan shrugged nonchalantly in response, neither denying nor confirming her comment.
“You believe what you choose to believe.”
Before Cora could think it through, she snapped. Her fist went flying towards Rogan’s face quicker than she expected and she could do nothing to retract it.
Rogan lifted his arm to block her a split-second before the punch was about to land. Deflecting her blow, he diverted her fist to the side and using the momentum she had built up he gripped her wrist, spinning her around and pinning it behind her back. Leaning on the space between her shoulder blades, he shoved her body against the door, his six foot three frame towering over her.
“Don’t you ever try something like that again,” he said, his tone lowering to a dangerous level, his head close to hers.
“Why not? What are you going to do? It’s not like you can afford to lose me so I don’t have to worry about being disposed of like normal employees,” Cora shot back, trying to act more confident than she felt which wasn’t easy when she could smell the wood her face was pressed against.
There was a controlled power to the grip he had around her wrist. She could sense that he would only have to make a slight adjustment to his hold to be able to snap it like a twig.
“You may be of more use to me than the others but that doesn’t mean you’re untouchable. I only need you coherent and that leaves a lot of options, regarding pain, open to me. It’s in your best interest not to test me.”

I gaped at him through a fan of bubbles and jabbed a finger at him. "You, mister, are a dead man!" With that, I beamed him with a handful of uneaten fruit. The berries bounced off his rock-hard chest, leaving behind a spattering of pink and purple stains before falling to the floor. His eyes lit up as he rounded the counter and I nearly fell out of my seat when I saw the lone banana slice stuck to his shirt right over his nipple.
"What are you—" He glanced down at his chest, then rolled his eyes before peeling the squishy fruit off his shirt and tossing it into the sink. He came at me then, all smiles and teeth, plucking me off the stool as if I weighed nothing more than a paperclip. "Now you're in trouble." I squirmed in his grip as he carried me over to the couch, my lungs void of air, my stomach aching from laughing so hard.
He dropped me onto the soft cushions and proceeded to sit on me as he pulled the berry-stained shirt over his head. "This," he said, holding the wadded-up piece of fabric, "was my favorite shirt." A wicked gleam danced behind his eyes as he tossed the shirt onto the coffee table and loomed over me. "I'm afraid I'll have to punish you now."
My eyes grew wide and I opened my mouth to squeak out a shocked "what,” but I never got the chance. He pounced on me like a lion attacking its prey and tickled me senseless.
"Stop! Stop," I squealed, barely able to breathe. "I can't … I can't take it. Uncle! Uncle!"
He sat back then, legs straddling either side of my torso and stared down at me with a heart-stopping grin bright enough to outshine the sun.
My eyes dipped from the perfection of his face, the playful air between us suddenly becoming electric and charged as I took in the magnificence of his bare chest.
His skin was golden, as if kissed by the sun, and incredibly smooth, not a speck of hair to be seen. Much like his arms, which I'd drooled over countless times, his torso was a work of art. Velvety skin over chiseled granite, he looked like one of those marble statues of the Greek gods come to life—large, beautiful, and full of restrained power.
He brushed a stray hair out of my eyes, my skin tingling where the tips of his fingers came in contact with my skin. "You owe me a new shirt, Sweet Cheeks."
My lips parted, the air in the room suddenly feeling sparse, my skin flushed and hypersensitive. I wanted to trace the grooves of his six-pack and tell him it would be a crime against humanity to cover up such a magnificent body. I wanted to run my hands up the length of his arms, over his shoulders, and across his back, to feel the warmth of his body pressing against mine, to feel the crushing weight of him against me as he held me in his arms. I wanted a lot of things in that moment, most of which would shock my mother and make old ladies blush. But, I did nothing. I said nothing. Just swallowed hard and nodded once as I stared into his fierce gaze.
Silence stretched its long arms and gave a weighted sigh, the electrical spark bouncing between us having ignited into an invisible ball of fire threatening to singe me down to my very bones.
His thumb brushed across my cheekbone, gentle, but sure. He leaned forward.
Oh, God. It's going to happen. He's going to kiss me. I shouldn't let him kiss me. I don't deserve to have him kiss me, but I really, really want him to. Please … What's wrong with me? How can I want this so badly when all I should feel is sad?
His thumb brushed across my lower lip, his eyes zeroing in on my mouth as he continued moving closer. Oh, God, he smells so good.
His lips hovered millimeters from mine, his warm, minty breath caressing my face like I wanted his lips to. And in that moment I forgot. I forgot the sadness shackled around my ankles like a pair of weighted manacles. I forgot my vow to shield myself against his terrible beauty. Forgot that I didn't deserve to feel happy, alive, whole. In that moment, I forgot everything but the warmth radiating off his body, the feel of his thighs pressing against my hips, and the way he devoured me with his eyes like he was starving and I was the last bit of food on the planet.
He licked his lips.
My breath caught.
And then it happened. He slanted his lips over mine in a gentle kiss that seared my soul.
I came unglued.
With a whimper I wrapped my arms around his neck and crushed my lips against his, needing to get closer to him and feeling as though a million layers of clothing separated my skin from his.
With a groan, he slipped his tongue inside my mouth and deepened the kiss, while maneuvering his knees between my legs. I wrapped them around his waist, reveling in the feel of his hard body crushing me to the couch. He tasted every bit as good as he smelled: fresh, clean, and a little minty, and I gave myself over to the kiss completely, losing myself in the magic that was Ryker’s touch.
