Release Date: 04/08/14
YA CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

Summary from Goodreads:
THE ROMEO CLUB is Hitch meets The Secret of My Success.

What happens when you agree to help your brother “de-nerdify” so he can catch the attention of the popular Chloe Anders, and to everyone's surprise, he actually lands her?

And what if his equally geeky friends come running with girl wish lists of their own, offering money for your services?

Well, if you’re sixteen-year-old, Delyla Denson, then you start The Romeo Club. A secret club where she’ll teach these guys how talk, act, and be cool around girls. It’s a win-win situation.

She’ll get enough money for the awesome prom dress she’s had her eye on, and the guys, well, they’ll get dates and maybe learn how to do something other than beat the next level on their video games.

There are only two problems with this plan. One, her quarterback/track star boyfriend is getting jealous of how much time she’s spending away from him and decides to try and figure out what’s going on. And two, Delyla is kind of falling for her brother’s BFF, Trey who she’s been hanging out with a lot more. And who thanks to her help, has caught the attention of the beautiful, perfect, and popular, Portia Rickard. With Portia and Trey heating up, Delyla realizes that maybe the person she’s meant to be with has been in front of her all this time.

But falling for Trey means she’ll have to take drastic measures including sabotage, with a capital S.

EXCERPT:
A few minutes later we arrived at Bogarty’s. We went inside and found Kevin working the counter.
“Hey,” he said. “I thought you had a date tonight?”
“I do. But I wanted to treat Del out for helping me.” Trey took some cash from his pocket. “Can we get two chocolate vanilla swirl ice creams?”
Warmth spread through my chest. He remembered my favorite flavor. How is it he knew more about me than my boyfriend?
“Coming right up.” Kevin took his money then gave him the change. He waved me closer to the counter then leaned forward. “Melanie’s working tonight.” He nodded to a petite girl making milkshakes. She had black hair with a shock of electric blue highlights. Her ears had numerous piercings, and she wore dark eyeliner. She had the whole rocker chick thing going on.
“She’s pretty,” I said. And to say I was surprised was an understatement. She didn’t seem like his type, but then again, who was I to judge.
He grinned. “Yeah. She is.” He handed us our ice cream. “I’ll see you guys later.”
I licked the side of my cone to keep the chocolate from dripping. Trey and I sat down in a corner booth and devoured our food. When I finished, I wiped my mouth with a napkin. My eyes shifted to the window. No way. Did he have GPS attached to me or something?
I shot to my feet. “Crap.”
“What’s wrong?”
“Rex is here with his friends. I told him I was having a Science Club meeting today.”
Trey followed my gaze. “They’re coming in.”
We rushed toward the counter. Maybe there was a back way out. “Kevin. We need to hide.”
“What?”
“Rex.” I nodded over my shoulder. “Please, Kev. There’s gotta be a back way out.”
“I can’t let you go through the kitchen. I’ll get fired.” He glanced behind him.
“Ah, I’m so dead.”
“Wait, I have an idea. Hey, Melanie can you watch the register for a second?”
She looked up. “Sure. But hurry.”
“Thanks.” He came around the counter. “Quick, follow me.” He led us down a narrow hall toward the bathrooms. But before we got there, he opened a door and pulled out two costumes.
“Oh brother. I’m not gonna like this, am I?” Trey took a giant ice cream cone costume from him.
“Nope. In fact, you’ll probably hate it. But it’s the only thing I got.” He handed me a Poppy the Popsicle costume.
I groaned. “This day just keeps getting better and better.”
“Hurry up, he’s coming in.” Kevin shoved the giant popsicle over my head.
I put my arms in, while he tugged it down. He then put big rubber shoes on me. I attempted to adjust the top so I could see out the eyeholes. Next to me I saw Trey and giggled. His head looked like a giant vanilla swirl ice cream. The cone part came down to his ankles so he had to waddle while he walked.
Kevin, shut the closet. “Just go out in the lobby area and dance around or something. When he leaves, you can get out of here.”
“You owe me big,” Trey said from beside me.
Just then a group of elementary kids saw us. “Look it’s Poppy the Popsicle and Icy the Ice Cream.”
In that moment, I wanted to die. Kids screeched at our legs. I hopped around in circles, giving them high fives. I attempted a booty shake dance and nearly toppled over, right into Rex’s lap.
“Hey, Rex. Looks like Poppy has a thing for track stars.” Bart laughed and slapped his back. “If you want to dance with the popsicle, I won’t tell Delyla.”
Rex grinned, grabbed my giant rubber hands and twirled me around. “Hey, can I get my picture taken with you?”
Holy balls. This wasn’t good. “Sure,” I said in a high-pitched Minnie Mouse type voice. He held up his phone and leaned in close. Wow, this would be one for the memory books.
“I think the popsicle is melting at your touch,” Bart said. “Maybe you should go for the ice cream cone instead.”
If he made one more popsicle comment, I was gonna shove my stick somewhere where the sun didn’t shine. Behind me, I heard Trey mutter something about a jack ass.
At last, Kevin called them up to the counter for their order.
“See you, Poppy.” Rex patted my back.
“Yeah, see you,” I said in the same high-pitched voice from before.
When they left, Trey and I raced to take the costumes off.
“Remind me never to come to the ice cream shop with you again,” Trey said. “I swear, if one more kid hit me in the crotch, I was gonna shove them in a trash can.”
“At least you didn’t have to deal with my boyfriend.” I laughed.
“Yeah, there’s that. But I think I’m ready to go now.”
He didn’t have to tell me twice. Goodbye ice cream, hello world.

Excerpt from Chapter One
889 words

The house was empty. No big surprise there: Dad never got home before me. When I checked my nose in the bathroom mirror, it was starting to swell up and look like someone had painted purple under my skin. I didn’t think it was broken, but no one had ever punched me in the face before, so what did I know?
At that moment, I knew three things. I didn’t want to explain my nose to my dad when he eventually got home. I probably needed to put ice on it. And I didn’t want to go to school tomorrow.
In the kitchen, I filled a towel with ice. As I tilted my head back and lifted the towel to my nose, a flash of white darted past the sliding glass door overlooking the backyard. Our yard was fenced, so no one should have been back there. By this point, thanks to the almost-daily antagonism from Billy, it was in my nature to see every unexpected or unexplained thing as a possible threat. It seemed foolish, but I grabbed a knife from the butcher block before I opened the door and peered out.
I was lucky I didn’t stab myself in the foot when I dropped the knife. A white horse, its head lowered to the ground as it searched for bits of grass to its liking, ambled slowly across the yard. When it heard the knife clatter, it looked up and stared right at me, blinked its glossy black eyes—
—and shook its wings.
I was glad no one was around to hear me, because I screamed like a girl. My first thought—well, my second thought, right after Oh my God there’s a horse with wings in our yard—was that Billy must have given me a concussion when he hit me and knocked me down. I looked away, shook my head, and blinked a couple times.
When I looked back, the horse was still there. It had folded up its wings and gone back to browsing the lawn.
“Richard, is that you?”
The voice, a woman’s, came from upstairs. It was followed by a clanking noise, like someone rattling pots and pans. I picked up the knife again and slid the door shut as quietly as possible.
“Richard?” she called again, then, in a more threatening tone, “Is someone down there?”
She started coming down the stairs. Pressing my back to the wall, I inched out of the kitchen and into the dining room. I watched the kitchen doorway, wondering who this woman was and how she knew my father…and what was all the clanking about? When it appeared she hadn’t followed me from the kitchen to the dining room, I turned around and prepared to make a run for the front door.
She was standing right behind me.
I screamed, again. Like a girl, again. (What? She scared the hell out of me.)
She also snatched my wrist and twisted the knife out of my grasp before I remembered I was holding it. Then she put her hands on my shoulders to keep me from running headlong into her chest, which was covered in a bronze piece of armor that made her look like Xena, Warrior Princess.
“Oh, it’s you,” she said—not in a dismissive tone, the way that sort of thing is usually said (at least to me), but more in a sense of wonder, as if I were the last person she expected to see. She put a hand under my chin, gently, which I didn’t expect since she wore a sword at her waist. “You’re so…” Her voice trailed off as she took in all of me. “Short.”
Short? I’d never seen this woman before and she was calling me short? Admittedly, she looked taller than my dad, even, maybe by a couple inches. Before I could protest, she turned my chin left, then right, inspecting my face.
“You’ve been in a fight, haven’t you?” She smiled, and it seemed like a smile of admiration, like being in a fight was a good thing.
I batted her hand aside and backed away. “Who are you?”
She frowned. “Didn’t your father tell you anything about me?”
“Tell me what?”
Before she could answer, the doorbell rang. In an instant, everything about her changed. Her expression hardened as she whipped around toward the door. She’d drawn her sword without my even noticing, and now she crept toward the foyer. Her steps were so light I didn’t even hear her armor clank.
The doorbell rang again, sounding far away to me, like a dream. I started to ask her what she was doing—hadn’t she ever heard a doorbell before? Why was this clearly crazy woman in our house? And why did she know my dad? But she silenced me with a gesture.
This time, instead of the doorbell, there was a knock.
“Jamie?” It was Sarah. “Are you home?”
“Who is she?” the Xena wannabe asked.
“Who is she? Who are you?”
She lowered her sword for a moment and looked at me as if I were asking a stupid question. “He really never told you anything about me, did he?”
“Tell me what?”
Her face softened, neither stony nor angry, but sad.
“I’m your mother.”

GUEST POST

If You Were in My Movie

Would I recognize my characters if they walked past me on the street? Sometimes, I wonder.

If Maia, Jamie’s mother in The Unwanted, strolled by in the yellow sundress with her hair in a ponytail like one of the early scenes in the novel, would she register to me as a woman from a near-immortal tribe of warrior women? Would Jamie, her son and my narrator, be more than your average skinny sixteen-year-old?

One of the things I love about my peer (if I can be audacious enough to call her a peer) Rebekah Weatherspoon’s novels is something she does on her Tumblr blog: she casts the characters in her novels using actors and people who look like them. It’s always fascinating to me to see who is her vision of the people who populate her novels, and once I do, it’s not too surprising that those people become the vision I have in my own mind when I read her work.

One of the reasons I love this is because I am so, so bad at it myself.

A friend of mine asked me whom I pictured playing Jamie, the narrator of The Unwanted, and I said, “What did David Tennant look like when he was sixteen? Maybe that. I don’t know.” Similarly, I try not to let Billy transform into the one football player I knew in high school. (Billy’s in better shape and has shorter hair, anyway. And is way more of a jerk.) The images that usually come to mind for my characters as I’m writing them are more like drawings, sketches that might be filled in with pastel colors, but I don’t have a definite face for a particular character, much less a Hollywood cast I can picture in the roles.

Because of course I’m hoping someone reads the book and says, “This would make a great movie.”

(OK, I’m actually not holding my breath waiting for that to happen. No, seriously, I’m not.)

There are two exceptions to this in The Unwanted though: Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and Angela, the principal of Jamie’s high school. I had an immediate visual image for the actresses I’d like to play each of them as I was writing it. I’m reluctant to say who they are, though, because as much as I like my casting choices, I also love the casting agent in my head who does the same thing with every other book I read.

So, if you’ve read The Unwanted already, or after you get into it, let me know: who would you cast if you made a movie of the book?

DARK HOPE
The Devil’s Assistant, Book 1
Publication Date:  March 3, 2014

Loving a demon isn’t the end of the world—losing him is.

Claire, the Devil’s assistant, knows very little about the world she was dropped into five years ago, when she inherited her mother’s unpaid debt to the Demon King. She certainly didn’t expect to be a contender for the Fallen Queen’s throne, a target for the Druid King’s mafia, or a suspect in the murder of Junior, the Devil’s oldest hell spawn.

In a last ditch effort to save her life and get out of her deal with the Devil, she sets out to solve Junior’s murder only to be taken prisoner by the four most dangerous immortal hell spawn alive.

Not to be out done, the Pagan Queen Mab, claims Claire for entering her realm uninvited. She has an old debt to settle with her brother the Devil. Taking Claire from him after losing her years ago is just icing on the cake.

Will Claire win her freedom, and save herself from the Devil? Or be trapped by Mab forever?

MY REVIEW

5 Stars

Delyla's brother, Drake, asked her to help him have a make over in order for him to gain the attention of Chloe, the girl, Drake's been crushing over. Little did she know that her success in helping her brother would also make her brother's friends want her help. This was the start of the Romeo Club. Delyla may be an athlete, popular, and with a cool boyfriend to match, she is also hiding something about herself and that she too is a nerd who loves to play video games. In helping her brother's friends, she realized that she's attracted to Trey and the more she spends time with him, her feelings grew. Which become the starts of her problems since she has a boyfriend and Trey likes another person.

I enjoyed reading "The Romeo Club" and finished it in one sitting. I liked that Delyla has a close relationship with her brother and that she helped him and the same for her brother's friends. In a way, I thought that Delyla had it all except for the part where she hid something about herself.

The Romeo Club was actually good for both her and her brother's friends because while helping them have a new make over and to boost their confidence, she also started to realize something about herself which was eye-opening for her. Although I must say I had a good laugh with a lot of scenes especially those with C.C. I think this is one of the few books that I like all the characters including the antagonists (although they might not be anymore). It was nice to read the success of her brother's friend but I think C.C. is one of my favorite characters. Even if he seems to be the joker of the group when he puts his mind to it, he really does well.

I liked the lesson in this story that the one important to you is already in front of you but you're just blinded. In this case, Delyla was that. Although it was predictable and I was right about Trey, I still enjoyed it very much. Delyla too has changed throughout the book but in a good way and I am happy for her especially what she realized about herself and of others. Although there was a part that really saddened me and if not for Trey I would have rooted for another character. And because of that I felt like imagining the what ifs. You just have to read the story to find out what I'm talking about since it would be a spoiler. Although there was one part in the ending I did not see coming with the exes.

The Romeo Club gives a good laugh, a light - hearted swoony romance, sweet, realistic, and it also gives a lesson.

GUEST POST
TRC Roundtable—Delyla asks the Nerd Herd Questions…
“This is Delyla Denson founder, creator, and brainchild behind The Romeo Club. I thought it might be fun to do a roundtable with the guys of TRC. Maybe get to know them better.”
“Oooh, a roundtable,” C.C. said. “Kind of like the Knights of the Roundtable. Perhaps everyone would like to see my sword.” He stood, waggling his eyebrows, his red hair stuck up like tiny curly poodle tails as he swung his hips around.
“Ew, how about sit down. And for your information, you’re more like the nerd of the roundtable,” I said. With a sigh, I glanced at my brother’s best friend.
Trey rolled his eyes. “I have a feeling you’re going to regret every moment of this.”
“I already am. Okay, back to the roundtable. Now, I’m sure our readers would love to get to know you better. So I’ve created a series of three questions for you guys. So answer them the best you can. The first one is: What types of girls are you into or like?”
“A girl who’d dress up like Princess Leia for me.  Maybe wear those buns on the side of her head—carry a laser blaster. Oh, and she has to wear that brown bikini get up from Return of the Jedi.” C.C. stared dreamily at the ceiling.
My nose wrinkled. “Seriously?”
“Heck yeah, if you’re gonna dream, you might as well dream big.”
“Um—how about the rest of you?” I turned to Kevin and Trey.
Kevin shoved his brown hair up under his beanie. “I want someone who’s into the same things as me.  You know, astronomy club, video games, watching sci-fi movies.”
“Trey?”
“Maybe a girl like you.” He grinned.
“You’re such a kiss ass,” C.C. said.
“You’re just jealous because you didn’t think of it.” Trey adjusted his square framed glasses.
My face blazed. “How about we move onto the next question.” I cleared my throat. “What has been the best part of your makeovers?”
“Hands down all the chicks that are noticing us now. I’ve become a grade A, babe magnet.” C.C. flexed his arm.
“Maybe this wasn’t a good idea after all. Are you going to make everything about girls?” My eyes narrowed at C.C.
“What? You asked a question, I gave an honest answer. Maybe you’re regretting giving us make overs because now you have competition for my attention.”
“Good grief, you’re so self-absorbed.” I attempted to ignore him. “So what about you two?”
“I feel more confident,” Kevin said.
“That’s awesome,” I said.
Trey smiled. “Me too. And I’ve talked to people I didn’t ever think I’d have to balls to before.”
“Aw, so you’ve grown a pair now? That’s kind of special. You’re becoming a man, Trey.” C.C. chuckled.
“Moving on.” I shook my head. This was one of those moments, where I really, really, really, wished I hadn’t decided to do this.
“Wait, we can’t move on yet.” C.C. climbed to his feet and loped to my side. “Why don’t you trade me seats and I can ask you some questions too. Like number one, what’s your favorite kind of girl? I bet she’s blonde, with a nice butt, tiny waist and—”
“Oh. My. God. You’re such a perv!”
“What? I’m sure people would like to know.”
“C.C. I think she’s gonna punch you in the face if you don’t leave her alone,” Trey said, laughing.
“More like, I’m gonna put this microphone where the sun refuses to shine! AKA your ass!”
Kevin covered his face with his hand. “So, I take it this interview thing might be over?”
I set the question cards on the table. “Yeah, I think maybe we’ll wrap it up here. The last thing we want to do is have C.C. offend everyone in the room.”
“For your information, everyone loves me.” C.C. puffed out his chest. “I bet I get like ten requests for dates after this interview.”
“More like mobs chasing you with pitchforks,” Trey muttered under his breath.
“Okay, we’re done. It’s been fun. Sorta. This is Delyla Denson signing off.”
“Wait, we can’t go yet. We never got to talk about my workout routine, or my chest hair, or…”
“Nope. We’re not going there.” I stood and walked out of the interview room. Geesh. The Nerd Herd really knew how to screw up a few easy questions. I had my work cut out for me.

[Blog Tour Kicks Off] Giveaway + Review: Twelve Steps by Veronica Bartles

0

Twelve Steps
by Veronica Bartles
Release Date: 03/25/14

Book Summary:
Sixteen-year-old Andi is tired of being a second-class sibling to perfect sister Laina. There in Laina's shadow, Andi's only noticeable feature is her pretty awesome hair. And even that is eclipsed by Laina's perfect everything else.

When Andi’s crush asks her to fix him up with Laina, Andi decides enough is enough and devises a twelve-step program to wrangle the spotlight away from Laina. After all, great hair must count for something.

Step 1: Admit she’s powerless to change her perfect sister, and accept that her life really, really sucks. OK, maybe that's two steps in one.

Step 4: Make a list of her good qualities besides great hair. There have got to be at least three good qualities, right?

Step 7: Demand attention for more than just her shortcomings, and break out of her shell. Easier said that done, but worth the effort in the long-run.

When a stolen kiss from her crush ends in disaster, Andi finds that her prince isn’t as charming as she'd hoped, and realizes she may need a new program--perhaps with less steps!

As cracks in Laina’s flawless façade begin to show, the sisters work together to find a spotlight big enough for both to shine.
